    Subscription Socks?!

A couple months ago, I received an email from one of those daily newsletters touting a new subscription service where the subscriber can get socks in the mail.

Well, there’s nothing better than getting socks and underwear in the mail (the unused variety, thanks), I tell you, so I hopped on the bandwagon and tried out their $20 sampler package – three pairs of assorted socks.

    Monthly Socks

A few weeks later, I received my socks in the mail and well.. they were really comfy! Kudos to the sock people for making something worth every penny! As a bonus, I recently received an additional freebie pair.. yay!

Check ‘em out… you’ll be surprised at how comfortable socks can be. www.monthlysocks.com

    Telephone number portability (finally)

Canada finally joins the ranks of Western Civilization with the advent of being able to retain and switch your telephone number to another service provider.

A little note from Anita that I received last week (March 14th, 2007):

Starting today, if you live in a Canadian Metropolitan area, you can finally switch cellular providers and keep your current number!  This isn’t something that the cell phone companies are going to announce because it’s kind of their worst nightmare.  The bad news is that there are still only three carriers in Canada so competition is less than fierce.  At least we now have the freedom to switch to the carrier that we hate the least and still keep the same number.

More details at Wireless Week and on the CRTC website. It’s about time and I can hear the mobile companies scrambling with people moving their forwarded mobile phone numbers to VOIP providers and other mobile providers.

    Any experiences out there, yet?

    Restaurant Scoop according to Nina

A quick update from the illustrious Nina:

The space formerly known as Capri 19 located at 332 Water Street will be known as So.Cial at Le Magasin, features an Oyster Bar and Restaurant and opens up in late March. City food has the scoop HERE.

The space formerly known as the attrocity at 52 Powell Street, Curious, will be known as Cobre which means copper in Spanish. Nuevo Latino cuisine. Waiterblog and Waiterforum have the scoop.

RareOne at 1355 Hornby Street rebrands to RareTwo on April 18th. They should be celebrating an anniversary soon. Tim Keller’s other restaurant, Metro, located at 200 Burrard Street is 14 weeks away from completion.

Orcas, Spirit Bears, now Eagles in the City

Ahhh.. Easter Seals. They always come up with something to top their previous project! This year they’ll be placing Eagles decorated by prominent artists in prominent places throughout the city.

    Here’s the press piece:

    The Eagle has Landed

Eagles in the City Logo Eagles in the City Prototype

Every winter from November to February literally thousands of Bald Eagles arrive to migrate on the West Coast of British Columbia to feast on Salmon on the banks of our rivers and tributaries. The Bald Eagle makes a statement of strength, striking appearance, grace and personifies freedom.

With this in mind the Bald Eagle will migrate in 2009/2010 onto the streets of Vancouver, Vancouver Island and beyond to complete the trilogy of public arts projects by the BC Lions Society with the first being the Orca coming out of the water, the second being the Spirit Bear living on the land and now the third being the Bald Eagle soaring through the skies. All proceeds from this project will go to supporting children with disabilities.

Local artists, in partnership with sponsoring individuals or organizations, will create a unique design and apply it to the surface of a 7 ½ foot custom formed fibreglass Bald Eagle sculpture. The Bald Eagle becomes the artist’s canvas. Once the work is complete, the Bald Eagle will be displayed in prominent public spaces around participating cities with the majority being placed in Vancouver’s downtown business core. A ‘Bald Eagle Flight Path’ showing the location of all the eagles will be created and distributed throughout participating communities.

    mmmm… bacon!

The Pork B.B.Q. Buffet house located on Bidwell Street (near Robson) is amongst my favourite once-a-month stops (I’d eat there more but Mona thinks it’s not good to endulge all the time).

    Pork B.B.Q. Buffet House
    841 Bidwell Street, Vancouver
    604-764-2697

So what is it? Well, their current specialty is BBQ pork bellies or bacon which hasn’t gone through any processing. They provide it to you raw and you get to cook it to taste.

They provide accompaniments like lettuce that you can wrap the pork belly up with and then there’s Korean kimchi (or kimchee), bean sprouts, bean paste which can accompany the pork belly in your lettuce wrap as well as rice and soup.

    Truly delectable!

Here’s some pictures from my last visit there as well as a flyer for the place:
